Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions we are asked most often about Walkie Desk, remote control and remote support. For anything else: info@walkiedesk.app.
What is Walkie Desk?
Walkie Desk is remote desktop software by iDev S.r.l., an Italian company: it is used to control PCs remotely, even with nobody in front of them, and to give remote support to customers. Whoever connects only needs a browser. It is in beta, with sign-up open to everyone.
How does remote control with Walkie Desk work?
Walkie Desk is installed on the PC to be reached and paired with your account using a one-time code; for a quick session the customer runs QuickSupport. Then you connect from walkiedesk.app in the browser: the PC and the browser talk directly whenever the network allows it, otherwise through a relay server in Italy, always with end-to-end encryption. Remote desktop in your browser.
Do I need to install anything on the computer I connect from?
No. A recent browser is enough: Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer, Safari on iPhone and iPad, Chrome on Android. Walkie Desk is installed only on the PC to be reached.
Which systems does it work on?
The computer to be reached can run 64-bit Windows 10 (version 2004 or later), Windows 11, Windows Server 2022 or 2025, Linux with Xorg sessions (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, RHEL and derivatives, also on 64-bit ARM) or, in beta, macOS 13.3 or later on Macs with Apple silicon or Intel processors. Control of Android devices is in development. Full requirements on the Download page.
Can I control my PC from my phone or tablet?
Yes, from the browser: Safari on iPhone and iPad, Chrome on Android, with gestures, an on-screen keyboard and full screen. The Android app is on Google Play and the iPhone and iPad app is in testing. Control your PC from your phone.
What is QuickSupport?
It is the program for quick support sessions: the person who needs help downloads it from walkiedesk.app/help and runs it without installing it and without an account, reads the ID and password to the technician and accepts the connection with «Allow». It is available for Windows today. Remote support with QuickSupport.
Can I reach a PC with nobody in front of it?
Yes, that is unattended access: you install Walkie Desk on the PC, pair it with your account using a one-time code and reach it whenever you need, as long as it is switched on and connected to the Internet. Unattended access.
Can I connect with an ID and password, like with TeamViewer?
Yes. Besides QuickSupport, from version 0.10.0 every PC with Walkie Desk for Windows, Linux or Mac shows an ID and a password in the app: whoever connects enters them under «Connect with ID» in the user area, with their own Walkie Desk account. The password never reaches our servers, the person at the PC confirms the connection, and only the PC’s administrator can turn the confirmation off, by choosing a password of their own. PCs reached this way stay in the “Recent” list for 90 days. Remote access with ID and password.
What is a seat?
One technician, one licence: a seat is one connected technician, with up to 3 PCs open at once. A PC that is switched on and waiting does not count. PCs are unlimited and seats only count the technicians connected at the same time. Several technicians work in the same account with the invitations and roles of the Team page, with a single subscription.
How much does Walkie Desk cost?
The Professional plan is paid per seat, with a yearly or monthly subscription, and is bought by card from the user area; the Personal plan is free for personal and non-commercial use. Figures, VAT and details on the Pricing page.
Is there a free trial?
During the beta, anyone who signs up for professional use receives 2 complimentary seats, with no expiry for the whole beta and free for a further 6 months after it ends, which add to any seats purchased. For new sign-ups after the beta, a 14-day trial with no card will replace the complimentary seats.
What is the Personal plan?
It is the free plan for personal and non-commercial use, to help family and friends or reach your own home PCs: 1 PC open at a time, up to 3 paired PCs, with QuickSupport or with ID and password up to 5 different PCs in 30 days and up to 10 hours a month of sessions through the relay server. It does not cover customer support, office PCs or working from home.
How many PCs can I add to my account?
In the Professional plan paired PCs and installations have no limit on their number, and you organise them in folders in the user area. In the Personal plan up to 3 paired PCs.
Are sessions secure?
Yes. Video, audio, keyboard, mouse, clipboard, files, chat messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted between the PC and the browser, even when they go through the relay server; every device has its own key that signs the session parameters; a second factor is mandatory for every account. Security.
Can iDev see my sessions?
No. The server puts the devices in touch and counts sessions, but session content is end-to-end encrypted: neither the server nor the relay server, when the connection goes through it, can read or alter it, and iDev does not keep it. What the server sees: Technical details.
Where are the servers and the data?
The servers are in Italy; account data and backups stay in the European Union. How we handle data: privacy notice.
I lost the phone with my authenticator app: how do I get back in?
If you have a passkey, sign in with it and set up the app on your new phone from Security. Otherwise, after your password choose «I have neither my phone nor my passkey» and enter your recovery code: we will ask you to create a new code and you can set up a new app. For your safety we email you and the new browser can connect to your PCs after 10 minutes. If you have also lost the recovery code, write to us at info@walkiedesk.app.
What is a passkey and do I need one?
A passkey lets you sign in with your device’s fingerprint, face or PIN, or with a security key, instead of the authenticator app code. It can live on your device or be synced to your Google, Apple or Microsoft account: it works the same way. You don’t need one, the authenticator app is enough; with a passkey, though, you approve a new browser on your own. A passkey is needed by those who manage the team (owner and administrators).
Someone used my recovery code: what do I do?
We email you straight away and a warning appears in your trusted browsers. If it wasn’t you, press «Stop» in the email or in the warning within 10 minutes: we will ask you to sign in with your password and authenticator app or passkey (the previous ones also work). The other person’s browser is blocked and cannot reach your PCs. Then you will choose a new password and a new recovery code.
Why do I have to update Walkie Desk on my PC to approve a browser without a passkey?
Your PCs are the ones that check which browsers may connect. Walkie Desk versions before 0.10.1 accept a new browser only if it is also approved with a passkey. As long as one of your PCs has an older version, the user area tells you and offers to approve with your passkey or to update that PC. Walkie Desk for Windows updates itself.
Do I need a VPN or to open ports on the firewall?
No. Walkie Desk connects outwards to our servers, and the PC and the browser connect directly with WebRTC whenever the network allows it; otherwise they go through the relay server, always encrypted.
Does the person at the PC know I am connected?
Yes. During the session a red frame surrounds the monitor with the name of the person connected and the «End» button. With QuickSupport the frame is always visible and the session starts only after «Allow».
Can I transfer files?
Yes, files and folders, with Windows, Linux and Mac PCs and with QuickSupport: in the “Files” panel you browse the PC’s folders and copy in both directions, with pause and resume. With Chrome and Edge a received folder is recreated as it is; with Firefox and Safari the files arrive one by one in Downloads. With older Windows PCs you send and receive single files.
Is there a chat during the session?
Yes, with Windows, Linux and Mac PCs and with QuickSupport: you write to whoever is at the PC and to the colleagues connected to the same session. Messages are end-to-end encrypted: they travel directly or, when needed, through the relay server, which cannot read them. Walkie Desk does not save the history and iDev does not keep the messages.
Can I hear the remote PC’s audio?
Yes, with Windows, Linux and Mac PCs from version 0.10.0 and with QuickSupport: in the viewer press «PC audio» and you hear in the browser what the PC is playing. It is off at the start of every session, the volume is yours alone, and the PC shows in the session frame who is receiving the audio. During a call with the PC the audio pauses, to avoid echo.
Can I call the person at the PC?
Yes, with a voice call or a video call (a beta feature), with Windows, Linux and Mac PCs from version 0.10.0 and with QuickSupport. Press «Call» or «Video call» in the viewer: a window appears on the PC and, if the person answers, the call opens in a Walkie Desk page in their browser, with nothing else to install. Audio and video are end-to-end encrypted, never pass through our servers in readable form and are not recorded. Not yet from the phone and tablet app.
Can I record the session?
Yes, from the browser, with Windows, Linux and Mac PCs and with QuickSupport. The video file is created and stays only on your device and is not uploaded to our servers; the PC shows “Recording in progress” with your name, and with QuickSupport recording starts only if the person at the PC allows it. If you have turned on the PC audio, the recording includes it; calls are never recorded. Record only if you have the right to do so: the rules are in the terms of use.
Can I stop files from being copied to or from my PC?
Yes. Whoever administers the PC chooses, in the Walkie Desk app (in the Windows taskbar or, on a Mac, in the menu bar), whether file transfer is allowed, must be confirmed every time or is not allowed, and in which directions. The setting lives on the PC and applies right away, also to sessions in progress: neither the server nor an account can change it. With QuickSupport the person at the PC chooses in the consent window.
How is it different from TeamViewer or AnyDesk?
Walkie Desk is paid per connected technician with unlimited PCs, technicians work from the browser, sessions are end-to-end encrypted with signed parameters and the servers are in Italy. It is in beta and some features of more established products are still missing: full comparison in TeamViewer and AnyDesk alternative.
How do I protect myself from fake tech support scams?
Use QuickSupport only with a technician you know or have contacted yourself. Banks, the police and Microsoft never ask you to install a remote control program, and neither Walkie Desk nor iDev will call you to offer support. Abuse can be reported on the Report an issue page.
How is Walkie Desk updated?
Walkie Desk for Windows updates itself, without interrupting sessions and only with signed updates; updates can be postponed or turned off. QuickSupport is downloaded from the website each time, so it is always the latest version. Updates.
How do I delete my account?
Yourself, from the app or the browser, in the user area. Instructions, timing and the data we keep on the Delete account page.
