How to access your work PC from home
Your office PC has the programs, files and printers you need. With Walkie Desk you open it from home in the browser, with no VPN and no ports to open on the firewall, and work as if you were at your desk.
Before you start
- Ask for permission. The office PC belongs to your company: before installing a remote access program, talk to your manager or to IT.
- The right plan. Working from home is professional use: you need the Professional plan, which during the beta includes 2 complimentary seats, with no expiry for the whole beta and free for a further 6 months after it ends. The Personal plan does not cover office PCs.
- Requirements. An office PC with 64-bit Windows 10 (version 2004 or later), Windows 11, Windows Server 2022 or 2025, or Linux and, in beta, Macs with Apple silicon or Intel processors, with similar steps described on the Download page. At home a browser is enough.
Step by step
-
Create your account
At walkiedesk.app choose «Sign up» for professional use (working from home is not personal use): email, password and second factor.
-
Install Walkie Desk on your work PC
At the office, download the setup from the Download page and install it; you need an administrator account on the PC, so ask IT if you do not have one.
-
Open «Add a PC»
In the user area open «Add a PC» (from «Devices»): choose Windows, Mac or Linux and you get the 9-character code, created automatically and valid for 10 minutes. If a colleague installs it, «Is someone else installing it?» prepares the message to send them.
-
Pair the PC
On the work PC click the Walkie Desk icon in the taskbar, near the clock, choose «Pair with an account» and enter the code.
-
Keep the PC reachable
When you leave, keep the PC switched on and connected to the Internet, with automatic sleep turned off. You can lock it: you will unlock it from home with your password.
-
Connect from home
At home sign in at walkiedesk.app with your account, choose your work PC and work as if you were at your desk. At the end close the session and lock the PC.
Tips
- Multiple monitors: if you have two screens at the office, choose which one to see from the session menu.
- Files: with Windows, Linux and Mac PCs, in the “Files” panel you browse the office PC’s folders and copy files and folders in both directions; with older Windows PCs you send and receive single files.
- People at the office can see you: during the session a red frame with your name surrounds the PC’s monitor, and whoever is there can end the session.
- From your phone too: in an emergency you can open the PC from your phone’s browser (how it works).
- Updates: Walkie Desk for Windows updates itself, without interrupting sessions.
